The question "What type of media is best for an archive?" produces about as many responses as the number of vendors you ask. In fact, there are a number of valid options for electronic data archive media. Factors such as volume of data, frequency of update or re-reference, legal and regulatory requirements for data nonrepudiability and privacy, and media cost -- just to name a few -- must be considered when making a selection.
The AMO Guide to Archive Media is a good place to learn about media options. Here you will find links to media by type, providing data on speeds and feeds and arguments for and against certain media in certain applications.
